They Don't Want You to Believe This, But I Do
What do I confess when I say:
He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary?
The eternal Son of God, Who is and remains true and eternal God,
John 1:1
- In the beginning was the Word,
- and the Word was with God,
- and the Word was God.
Colossians 1:15-17
- He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
- For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
- And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
Took upon Himself true human nature
From the flesh and blood of the virgin Mary...
Matthew 1:18-23
- Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
- Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.
- But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
- “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”
- So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
- “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
Luke 1:35
- And the angel answered and said to her,
- “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
- and the power of the Highest will overshadow you;
- therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.”
Psalm 132:11
- The LORD has sworn in truth to David;
- He will not turn from it:
- “I will set upon your throne the fruit of your body.”
Matthew 1:1
- The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
- …but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.
- Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren,
- that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God,
- to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
...yet without sin.
Hebrews 4:15
- For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses,
- but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
- For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens;
- who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.
