Praising God For His Wrath
Have you ever praised God for His wrath?
- The biblical writers had no inhibitions in discussing wrath as an essential attribute of the Almighty.
- Dr. A. W. Pink in his book on the attributes of God says there are more references in Scripture to the anger, fury, and wrath of God
- than to His love and tenderness.
- Here’s the opening stanza of an Isaac Watts hymn:
Adore and tremble, for our God
Is a consuming fire!
His jealous eyes His wrath inflame,
And raise His vengeance higher.
- His wrath isn’t an emotional outburst;
- it’s the judicial response of a holy God to the presence of evil in the universe.
- If He had no response to sin-induced suffering in this world,
- He’d be less than perfect.
- What kind of Moral Being would be unaffected by torture chambers, death camps, and sadistic cruelty?
The problem, of course, is that God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness—
- including mine.
- But it is balanced by His mercy,
- ingeniously displayed on the cross of Jesus Christ,
- who bore the wrath of God in our stead.
- And that’s why we praise Him.
