Pain: God's Megaphone

We are not merely imperfect creatures

  • who must be improved:
  • we are rebels who must lay down our arms.
...to render back the will
  • which we have so long claimed for our own,
  • is in itself, where ever and however it is done,
  • a grievous pain.
...to surrender a self-will
  • inflamed and swollen with years of usurpation
  • is a kind of death.

The human spirit...
  • will not even begin to try to surrender self-will
  • as long as all seems to be well with it.
God whispers to us in our pleasures,
  • speaks in our conscience,
  • but shouts in our pain:
  • it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.
