Pain: God's Megaphone
We are not merely imperfect creatures
- who must be improved:
- we are rebels who must lay down our arms.
...to render back the will
- which we have so long claimed for our own,
- is in itself, where ever and however it is done,
- a grievous pain.
...to surrender a self-will
- inflamed and swollen with years of usurpation
- is a kind of death.
- will not even begin to try to surrender self-will
- as long as all seems to be well with it.
God whispers to us in our pleasures,
- speaks in our conscience,
- but shouts in our pain:
- it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.
