The Gospel Is Not a Call for Christian Nationalism

The gospel

  • is not a summons to Christian nationalism or kingdom living.
  • Nor is it a message about what we can do for God.
  • The gospel is not a description of our efforts against today's woke agenda or a manual for cultural transformation.
  • The gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose again on the third day.
From the Heidelberg Catechism Lord's Day 6

Q. Why must my Mediator be a true and righteous man?

A. He must be a true man

  • Because the justice of God requires that the same human nature which has sinned should pay for sin.
He must be a righteous man

  • Because one who himself is a sinner cannot pay for others.

Q. Why must He at the same time be true God?

A. He must be true God

  • so that by the power of His divine nature He might bear in His human nature the burden of God’s wrath,
  • and might obtain for us and restore to us righteousness and life.

Q. But who is that Mediator who at the same time is true God and a true and righteous man?

A. Our Lord Jesus Christ,

  • whom God made our wisdom,
  • our righteousness and
  • sanctification
  • and redemption (1 Corinthians 1:30).

Q. From where do you know this?

A. From the holy gospel,

  • which God Himself first revealed in Paradise.
  • Later, He had it proclaimed by the patriarchs and prophets,
  • and foreshadowed by the sacrifices and other ceremonies of the law.
  • Finally, He had it fulfilled through His only Son.
For the Bible Tells Me So...

1 Corinthians 15:21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.

Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not (perish but have eternal life.

1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

Galatians 4:4,5 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.

From The Good News We Almost Forgot by Kevin DeYoung:

Never compromise on the cross.  And never stop glorying in the cross where Christ accepted the penalties that should belong to us so that we can claim the blessings that would otherwise belong to Him.
