That's How Things Were in the Beginning
From The Good News We Almost Forgot by Kevin DeYoung:
- Why are we the way we are? Why are we so self-centered and self-absorbed? Is this how God made us - petty, proud, and perverse?
From The Heidelberg Catechism Lord's Day 3:
Q. Did God, then, create man so wicked and perverse?
A. No, on the contrary, God created man good1
- Genesis 1:31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
and in His image,
- Genesis 1:26,27 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
that is, in true righteousness and holiness,
- Ephesians 4:24 …and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
so that he might rightly know God his Creator,
- Colossians 3:10 …and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.
heartily love Him, and live with Him in eternal blessedness to praise and glorify Him.
- Psalm 8 O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens.
- You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you.
- When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers - the moon and the stars you set in place - what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?
- Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor. You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority - the flocks and the herds and all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and everything that swims the ocean currents.
- O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
From The Good News We Almost Forgot by Kevin DeYoung:
- We have souls. We were made to know God and look like God. That's how things were in the beginning.
